According to Amnesty International, Iran's Majles is currently considering legislation that would place all nongovernmental organizations in the country under the supervision of an Interior Ministry committee. The committee would include representatives of the Intelligence Ministry, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Basij militia, as well as Interior Ministry officials, and would control the boards of directors, access to resources and public activities of all Iranian civil society organizations. Iranian NGOs are strongly opposed to the bill, and have called upon the Majles to reject it; Amnesty International contends that the bill "would sound the death knell for civil society in Iran."
