Iranian Hardliners Seize Control of University
Iran's Leader, the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has issued a decree that will allow him and other conservatives to take control of the Islamic Azad University, the country's largest private university. The university is considered a bastion of support for Iranian reformists including Mir Hossein Mousavi, the opposition presidential candidate whose apparently fraudulent defeat in 2009 triggered nationwide protests. The university is also a stronghold of support for the Hojjat-al-Islam Ali-Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, a former Iranian president widely viewed as a pragmatic moderate:
